COMMUNITY GROUPS

City goes international for gay Asian conference

by Howard Gollop

Cleveland-The city became an international gay tourist destination this past Labor Day weekend. Even the president of the United States took time out of his rather "busy" schedule to send a congratulatory letter to the local group that made it all possible.

Asians and Friends-Cleveland, a social organization with an outreach to the gay Asian community and their friends, hosted more than 220 people from London, Hong Kong, Canada and even Switzerland. The International Friendship Weekend gave the local Asian group a chance to show off its city's many world-class amenities as well as its support for gay life.

"These International Friendship Weekends have been held in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York," said Asians and Friends-Cleveland president Rollie Santos. He explained that the international organization that helps coordinate gay Asian groups around the world felt Cleveland was ripe to host the event.

"To my surprise, everything worked like magic," Santos said. "And we're in the pink, because we even kept in the black, financially speaking."

The event included a trip to Taste of Cleveland, a trolley tour of the city-including the Lesbian and Gay Community Center-a dinner-dance cruise on the Goodtime III, a trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art to see the special “Buddhist Treasures from Nara" exhibit, a Japanese Family Festival, a trip to the West Side Market and Saturday Bazaar, beach volleyball on the gay-friendly Edgewater Beach,

an Asian cultural pageant (yes, with an Asian drag competition) and a dinner dance.

"It was amazing how the city cooperated with making this Labor Day event so special," Santos said. The Sheraton City Center, the host hotel, rolled out the red carpet; the Regional Transit Authority always accommodated the extra passengers (even the New Yorkers were impressed with Cleveland's friendly and proficient rail system); and the Cleveland Museum of Art, nearby Chinese Cultural Garden and Cleveland's first-class Chinatown restaurants made Cleveland seem like a sensational focal point for Asian culture.

"We even got surprising cooperation from Cabaret Dada, which put some extra gay humor into its special Thursday night improvisation show," Santos said. “And Lolley the Trolley drove by special gay and Asian points of interest for its special convention tour of Cleveland."

"We're still receiving mail from around the world by people who came to our convention and thought our group and our city was unbelievable," Santos said. “A lot were just amazed, because they originally thought our city was smaller."

The best letters Asians and FriendsCleveland received were from several prominent government officialsespecially Cleveland mayor Michael White, Sen. John Glenn and President Bill Clinton to congratulate the group on its international efforts and support for two up and coming minority groups in America.✔

Howard Gollop is vice president of Asians and Friends-Cleveland, and a chair of International Friendship Weekend '98.
